cb radio for preparedness

Steven Harris owns Radios1234.com and, while it is down for current website maintenance and upgrades, the archived version of his website still offers tremendous value to understand the basics of radio communication for emergencies and long-term preparedness.

Here is the archive:

There were several helpful sections on this website including his over-90-minute audio class on all things related to radios, including the 6 categories of radios you will need. Harris busts myths, helps you sort through the confusion, and gives real world examples of how you can help your loved ones & neighbors during virtually any kind of preparedness situation from blackouts all the way to longer-term grid-down situations.

This section from the archive gives you just a glimpse of what you will get when you visit that link:

Radio Communications – Why its So Important.
Because you can only hear the neighbor across the fence, you can only hear a gun shot from maybe a mile away.  If you have no TV, no radio, no CB, no Ham Radio, no Police Scanner, no short wave radio than you are in the dark and part of the rumor mill.  When you have any of these methods of communications you are wired in and getting the information.  While the TV and the local Radio might  not be the best source of raw 100% current information, listening to Ham radio and the police scanner will tell you what is going on in your city or town.  CB will also allow you to speak to others who might be listening using these methods even if you do not have them.  Ham (Amateur) radio is a community onto itself and full of information.  Listening to a CB and talking to truckers might get you word of mouth information he heard when he was 500 miles away earlier in the day.  A shortwave radio will allow you to pickup news from other countries.  This can be handy if you do not have TV or power for your TV.  If your cable is out and you do not have direct TV or DISH then you are not getting anything but local digital TV over the air waves.
